Home & Garden
Established in 1950, Tracy's Home Furnishings is one of Shelbyville, KY’s oldest and most reputable businesses.
Founder J.B. Tracy had a 17-year career with Greyhound bus lines before retiring to pursue the dream of owning his own service business. Repairing radios and other appliances had been a hobby since his youth, and neighbors and friends often came to him for help. J.B’s wife Margaret began helping him with book keeping. When they opened their first shop on Tenth Street , she helped him sell appliances, T.Vs and radios.
The Tracy’s business continued to develop after moving to Main Street, eventually growing to include furniture and mattresses. People trusted J.B. and Margaret, and the couple gained a reputation not only for their integrity, but also for their generosity and kindness.
Their youngest son, Mike, grew up helping out at the store, and eventually came to work with his parents full-time after attending Eastern Kentucky University and graduating from the United Electronics Institute.
In November 1973, tragedy struck Tracy's. The entire store was gutted by a fire. All of their inventories, as well their accounts books, were completely destroyed. Though devastated, J.B. and Margaret began the hard work of rebuilding the business they loved. Supported by loyal customers, the Tracy’s achieved again the success they had known, eventually expanding their showroom space.
Today J.B. and Margaret’s business continues to thrive in its historic Main Street location, under the leadership of their son, Mike.
